Sugarcane is a staple crop in Okinawa. Not only does it support our food culture as a raw material for sugar, it also plays a role in preventing soil from flowing into the sea and protecting marine life and coral. In addition, sugarcane is produced at a rate of approximately 1.896 billion tons per year worldwide, making it one of the world's largest agricultural products. However, in recent years, the aging of farmers and the lack of successors have led to a decrease in sugarcane farmers, and the industry is facing a crisis of decline. Bagasse: an underutilized resource with potential The residue left after squeezing sugarcane is called "bagasse". Approximately 500 million tons of bagasse are produced worldwide annually. Until now, most of it has been used as fuel for sugar production, and although some is used as biomass or livestock feed, it has not been fully utilized. We have upcycled this bagasse as a raw material and developed our own unique material. A circular model that does not generate waste 01. Sugarcane field 01. Sugarcane field Sugarcane is a staple crop in Okinawa Prefecture. It accounts for about 50% of the cultivated land area, and the annual harvest amount to about 800,000 tons. The harvested sugarcane is transported to sugar factories and processed into sugar. 02. Bagasse Bagasse is a by-product generated during sugar production. About 200,000 tons are produced annually in Okinawa Prefecture. It is mainly used as fuel for incineration or as fertilizer, but a certain amount of surplus bagasse is still generated, and further effective utilization methods are being sought. 03. Bagasse washi paper The bagasse, which has been turned into powder, is processed into washi paper using the traditional techniques of Mino washi paper craftsmen. 04. Bagasse Washi Yarn: Washi paper is finely slit and twisted together to create washi yarn. Compared to cotton, it has a lighter finish and is a fiber with high water absorption and quick-drying properties. 05. Denim Fabric: The washi yarn is woven into denim fabric in Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture, a major denim production area in Japan. The result is a denim fabric with a unique smooth texture and excellent water absorption and quick-drying properties. 06. Shima Denim Products: The fabric is manufactured into products by artisans in Okinawa Prefecture, Fukuyama City in Hiroshima Prefecture, Kurashiki City in Okayama Prefecture, and other parts of Japan. 07. Collection of Leftover Fabric, Thread Scraps, and Waste: All thread scraps and offcuts generated during the manufacturing of fabrics and products are collected. We also offer a trade-in service for sold products and have established a collection route. 08. Carbonization: All waste is processed into charcoal by carbonization, which reduces CO₂ emissions compared to incineration and is effectively utilized as a new material. 09. Effective use of charcoal: Carbonized waste is porous and suitable as a soil conditioner. It can also be effectively used as a dye or as an incinerator with good combustion efficiency. 10. Return to farmland: It is returned to farmland as a soil conditioner to promote the growth of new sugarcane. Japan quality manufacturing: By building a domestic supply chain, we not only improve quality but also reduce transportation costs and environmental impact. Sugar factory: Miyako Island, Okinawa Prefecture. We use "bagasse," the residue left over from sugarcane extraction, as a raw material. Okinawa Powder Foods: Itoman City, Okinawa Prefecture. This company processes nutrient-rich island vegetables grown in Okinawa into powder. They dry and crush bagasse to produce bagasse powder, which is used as a raw material for bagasse washi paper. Daifuku Paper Manufacturing Co., Ltd.: Mino City, Gifu Prefecture. This paper manufacturing company is located in a naturally rich area. They pursue the potential of Mino washi paper, which has been cultivated in this area since the Nara period, and manufacture high-quality, one-of-a-kind washi paper that meets customer needs, based on this traditional technology. Bagasse washi, a type of Japanese paper made from bagasse powder and Manila hemp, was created here. Bingo Yarn Twisting is a company in Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture that specializes in yarn twisting. Yarn twisting refers to the process of adding a twist to a single or multiple strands of yarn using a "twisting machine." By twisting the yarn, it becomes possible to increase its strength, combine it with different materials, and create a unique texture and functionality. Shinohara Textile Co., Ltd. is a long-established textile manufacturer in Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture, with a history of over 100 years. They weave fabrics for famous domestic and international brands. Bagasse fabric, which uses warp threads made from bagasse washi, is woven here. Futaba Co., Ltd. is a sewing factory in Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture, that produces Kariyushi wear. They handle a large number of Kariyushi wear garments, the formal wear of Okinawa Prefecture. Each garment is carefully made by skilled sewing craftsmen.
