This Okinawa-based brand creates its own unique "bagasse denim" made from Okinawan sugarcane.
A key feature is that instead of discarding bagasse, the residue left over from sugar production, it's transformed into a new material: denim.
Bagasse is processed into a powder and then transformed into washi paper by artisans using the traditional Japanese technique of Mino washi. This washi paper is then further processed into thin strips to create "bagasse washi yarn," which is then woven with cotton in the denim production area of Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture, to create denim fabric.
Fabrics made with bagasse washi (Japanese paper) yarn are lighter than cotton-only fabrics, have superior water absorption and quick-drying properties, and are characterized by their unique smooth texture. From there, they are used to create products such as jeans, bags, and shirts by artisans throughout Japan, including in Okinawa Prefecture, Fukuyama City in Hiroshima Prefecture, and Kurashiki City in Okayama Prefecture.
Furthermore, we are working on creating a circular system that collects thread scraps and cut fabrics generated during product manufacturing, carbonizes them, and returns them to farmland as soil conditioners.
This manufacturer starts with sugarcane from Okinawa and connects it with Mino washi paper, denim from Hiroshima, and sewing techniques from Okinawa and other parts of Japan, bringing together local resources and craftsmanship from all over Japan into a single product.
